Tamilnadu Mercantile Bank began its operations in the year 1921 by installing its headquarters at Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. The computerized banking operations began at the headquarters by the year 1984. The bank was initially set up to meet the financial requirements of the Nadar trading community. For many years, until independence, the bank never expanded its operations beyond the borders of Tamil Nadu. The first-ever branch outside Tamil Nadu was installed in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
